We investigate the optical and optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional semiconductors and their van-der-Waals heterostructures on the nanoscale using a unique instrument consisting of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) coupled to an inverted optical microscope. This technique combines the local, electrical excitation via the tunneling current and the wide-field imaging capabilities of the optical microscope in the direct (“real”) and reciprocal (“Fourier”) spaces. Recently, we have demonstrated the STM-induced excitonic luminescence of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.
